Why Talk About the 21st c. Economic Bill of Rights in West Virginia?

I just wanted to take a quick moment and actually read through the rights included in the 21st-century Economic Bill of Rights that we are fighting for in this campaign.

And what we believe is that every West Virginian and every American has

-the right to a job and a living wage,
-the right to a voice in the workplace through a union and collective bargaining,
-the right to comprehensive quality health care,
-the right to a complete cost-free public education and access to broadband Internet,
-the right to decent, safe, affordable housing,
-the right to a clean environment and a healthy planet,
-the right to meaningful resources at birth and a secure retirement,
-the right to sound banking and financial services,
-the right to an equitable and economically fair justice system, and
-the right to vote and otherwise participate in public life.

I don't think there's anything radical about these rights.

I think that these are things that we all actually know that we want for ourselves and that we want for our neighbors and that we want for our family.

And I think that this is something that our legislators should be able to look at and hold up every piece of legislation and ask: Are we working toward securing these rights? Or are we working to take these rights away from one group or another?

These are universal rights.

And you know what? This is not a prescriptive thing that spells out exactly that this way is or that way is how we secure each of these rights.

That is the work of the legislature to decide how we achieve securing each of these rights.

But the first step to realizing these rights is recognizing that these are rights that should be secured.

Thank you,
